Larry Horayne, a review

Moments like this make me proud (to be involved in one of the oddest art forms extant.)

Magic is full of some of the worst forms of humanity... And, some of the brightest & best. On rare occasions, the two collide & ya get something like this.

So... Here we have (the soon to be greater than even he thinks he is) " Larry Horayne" reviewing my recent "Pinky Swear" download (available @ Trcky.com)

NSFW: yes indeed

Tricks of My Trade - The Magic of Doug Conn

Well, it's official: just heard the word from the man himself: Paul Cummins and his FASDIU press has reprinted "Tricks of My Trade - The Magic of Doug Conn"
(hey, that's me!)

Here's a look at the book, contents and a sneak preview with a couple freebies: http://fasdiu.com/tomt.html *The hardcover re-release is not up on his website yet (but, should be soon.) In the interim, you can just email Paul and get yours while the getting is good (How much? $45 + $5 shipping)  Here's his contact page: http://fasdiu.com/contact.html

Yo: If you're not familiar with Paul's work: ALL off Paul's stuff is rock solid with the worker in mind. His FASDIU notes are legendary (both volumes are chock full of routines you will USE) and his DVD's are top notch productions. While Paul is generally known as a card-man, his coin work is some of the best in the world. Check out Up In Smoke for some of his mind blowing coin work. Go ahead, you know ya wanna: Open your mind, your wallet and give your audience some love... www.fasdiu.com

Majokes

"What's the difference between a magician and a savings bond?

The savings bond eventually matures and earns money."

------- or:

"What do you call a magician without a girlfriend?

Homeless."

--------

A man is walking down the street when he passes by a homeless man who is down on his luck. The beggar asks the stranger for some money so he could get something to eat.

The man asks, "Will you use the money to buy booze?"

The beggar says, "No, I promise I won't. I don't drink."

The man says, "Will you gamble it away?"

The beggar assures the man, "I have never gambled a day in my life."

Cigarettes?
No sir, I don't smoke!

"Well, you must come with me to meet my wife," demands the man,
Wha? Why asks the beggar?
"I want her to see what happens to a man who doesn't drink, smoke or gamble!"

Appearing Aces to Order

Here's something I was playing with during my hospital stay:

Effect = freely named aces appear at will FU atop FD pack

Setup: Aces FU under top FD card in CHaSeD order (or SHoCkeD or whatev floats ur boat)

Method: Erdnase &/or Hurricane changes.

False shuffles &/or cuts in between feels good (For me anyway)

*begin effect with a break two cards deep: this in prep for someone naming something other than club (you're ready for hearts & Spade/Diamond is only a click or two away)

So yeah: just Erdnase (AKA houdini change) if ya need to produce ace beneath the  top card... hurricane to produce deeper aces (Chang's handling of Alford's Hover Change is another option.)

Option: Use One hand top palm to visually produce last ace (I suggest Marlo's handling: his alternative to the air pressure turn over: *doing the palm as the pack is tossed into the other hand.) His 'rise-rise' could/would also work... but, these days, I'm leaning to keeping everything off the table.

A pass (ditching just the top card) is another visual production option. Heck, there's lots of options for the last one... Takagi's Rising Triumph would really kick butt.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method #2 (less appealing due to obtuse framing)
Aces in known order FU on bottom of pack.
Using kick count & side steal, they (can) appear at will (ala' Lepzig)

Advantage here = they are in full palm & as such can be produced away from the pack)

Hartman / Fisher pop out is a usable option as is Forton's Pop-Out move.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Combining these two idea (two aces FU below top card & two aces on bottom) Might be the best option for some.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This thing might be best climaxed with a transpo after the 3rd ace is produced...

how? what? ya want everything? buy the download (no... there's no download... yet ;)

@ Home and trickin

I'm at home from my crazy adventure (abdominal surgery) at the hospital and after settling in from a long day one (trekking home, multiple walmart visits, then another pharmacy, etc) I'm starting to feel back to normal... !

I awoke yesterday morning with that great feeling of wanting to work out some stuffs w/the cards and coins. Within an hour, I had two strong ideas that I feel have great merit:
#1 a great finale/addition to my 'lumps' (coins to mug) routine &
#2 a good start to a motivated production / color change sequence.

Note on #2: think bout what/why you're doing what you do...
cards pivot, pop, jump out, cards change color, cards transpose.... why.... WHY?
Give your audience a reason to appreciate the effect. (Elmsley: Automatic Producer rule #1)

Alright, not gonna blabber on too long here.... I have weeks of missed posts on TSD and the pebble that I want/need to catch up on: I xpect to be sitting at this PC for a few hours this a.m. (providing my gut/divot will allow) Looking forward on catching up and beyond.

Back in Black,
Conn

Surgery...

So, my illness turned out to be a ruptured appendix; yeah, I know, right!?! My body managed to contain the infection in the form of several abdominal cysts, which need to be removed (a lil tricky as the biggest one is close to some fragile internal organs) I'm typing this post from LSU interim hospital where I'm scheduled for surgery today (on Fri the 13th...) Just wanted to throw out a line thanks to my family and friends who have been so supportive of my crazy life. I don't expect anything stupid to happen, but if it does, I can go knowing I've been a blessed man. Nuff with that gibberish I look forward to returning to my nonsensical ramblings ASAP. See ya's soon.
